Traditional Chinese Cupping
Chinese cupping is a traditional therapy where suction cups are applied to the skin to relieve pain, improve blood flow, and stimulate healing, with potential benefits for conditions like low back pain, neck pain, and osteoarthritis. The primary mechanism is understood to be through the stimulation of the nervous system and increased blood circulation in the affected area. Research indicates promising results in pain reduction and functional improvement. Cupping is also used as a form of deep tissue massage, with the vacuum and the pressure creating a similar stimulating and muscle-relaxing effect.
It works by, placing cups on the skin and creating a vacuum with a pump. This vacuum pulls blood to the surface of the skin, to enhance circulation and promote the body’s natural healing response in the affected area. The pressure and sensations generated during cupping help stimulate nerve fibres, which generally help to inhibit pain signals.
Important Note:
The suction force from cupping breaks open tiny blood vessels called capillaries under your skin. You’ll have red, round cupping therapy marks that should fade in a week or two. Although these marks will look like bruises, they’re not true bruises that injure muscle fibers.
Traditional Chinese Wet Cupping
Traditional Chinese ‘wet’ cupping, (拔罐療法 bá guàn liáo fǎ), is a centuries-old practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves making small skin lesions (using a very small sterilized disposable medical lancet) and then using suction cups to draw out small quantities of blood and extracellular fluid to promote healing. This is only used where conditions have been fully evaluated and are considered more serious, and where blood circulation may be impaired in the damaged area/s.
Important Note:
We provide a strong topical anaesthetic prior to the procedure to manage any local pain, and requires more consultation time to be effective.
